Hajj is one of the most significant spiritual journeys in Islam, bringing Muslims from around the world together in worship, prayer, and remembrance of Allah. The main Hajj rituals take place over several days in Dhul Hijjah, following a specific sequence that every pilgrim should understand before travelling.
From standing in prayer at Arafat to performing Tawaf around the Ka’bah, each day carries its own spiritual meaning. Here is a simple day-by-day guide to the five days of Hajj.
1. Day One — 8th Dhul Hijjah: Journey to Mina
The first day of the main Hajj rituals is known as Yawm at-Tarwiyah. Pilgrims travel to Mina, a valley near Makkah, and spend the day preparing spiritually for the days ahead.
Enter or remain in the state of Ihram according to the pilgrim’s Hajj arrangement.
Recite the Talbiyah and engage in prayer and remembrance of Allah.
Perform the prescribed daily prayers while staying in Mina.
Rest and prepare for the important day of Arafat.
2. Day Two — 9th Dhul Hijjah: Standing at Arafat
The Day of Arafat is the central day of Hajj and holds immense spiritual significance. Pilgrims travel from Mina to the plain of Arafat, where they spend time in worship and supplication.
Spend the prescribed time at Arafat in accordance with Hajj requirements.
Make sincere dua, seek forgiveness, and remember Allah.
Pray Dhuhr and Asr according to the applicable Hajj arrangements.
After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah without performing Maghrib at Arafat.
3. Day Three — 10th Dhul Hijjah: Eid al-Adha and Major Rituals
Known as Yawm an-Nahr, this day coincides with Eid al-Adha. Pilgrims perform important Hajj rites that mark a major stage in their spiritual journey.
Travel from Muzdalifah towards Mina.
Collect pebbles as required for the stoning ritual.
Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah according to the prescribed procedure.
Complete the required animal sacrifice where applicable.
Shave or trim the hair and exit Ihram in accordance with the applicable rules.
Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i when required, following the prescribed order and arrangements.
4. Day Four — 11th Dhul Hijjah: Stoning the Three Jamarat
On the fourth day, pilgrims generally remain in Mina and continue the prescribed Hajj rituals. The day focuses on the symbolic stoning of the three Jamarat.
Stone the small, middle, and large Jamarat in the prescribed order after the appropriate time begins.
Make dua after stoning the first and second Jamarat, where prescribed.
Spend time in prayer, remembrance, and reflection.
Remain in Mina according to the requirements of the Hajj schedule.
5. Day Five — 12th Dhul Hijjah: Completing the Mina Rituals
The fifth day is another important stage of Hajj. Pilgrims who leave Mina early may depart after completing the required stoning rituals on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah, provided they meet the applicable conditions.
Perform the prescribed stoning of all three Jamarat.
Complete any remaining Hajj obligations.
Depart Mina within the permitted timeframe if following the early departure option.
Pilgrims who remain for the 13th of Dhul Hijjah perform the additional prescribed stoning before leaving.
